Brand New Folly Beach Pier Opened December 2022

FOLLY BEACH PIER HISTORY

The Folly Pier has a rich history of attracting top-tier musical acts and venues for entertainment. The original structure was a 120-feet wide and 97-feet long green and white pavilion made from palmetto tree logs. Its popularity stemmed from the large sheltered dance floor, which was comparable in size to a basketball court. The likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, The Drifters, and The Coasters all graced the pier with their performances, cementing its status as a cultural hub.

After experiencing two devastating fires, the Folly Pier and pavilion were eventually demolished, and a Holiday Inn hotel now stands in their place. However, the 1.4 acres of beachfront property on Folly were acquired by Charleston County Parks, allowing for the creation of the Edwin S. Taylor Folly Beach Fishing Pier in 1995. Unfortunately, the wooden pier deteriorated quickly because of marine borers, which typically have a lifespan of 20-25 years.

To address this issue, construction on a new pier began in October 2020 and was completed in December 2022. The new pier uses prestressed concrete piles, a concrete substructure, concrete beams, and wooden timber deck panels. It pays homage to the original structure while offering modern improvements and a longer lifespan. Visitors can once again enjoy the beauty and entertainment that the Folly Pier offers.
